Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna - III

Firstly, I have not seen the film. I do not propose to see the film. And if I do eventually end up watching the film, it would be only because my wife will coerce me into watching it and in which case, I will put up a post setting out the agonizing moments suffered by me while watching the film.

My twenty odd years of “watching hindi films” experience has given me this knack of predicting with amazing accuracy whether the film will be a hit or a flop. I can also predict with an equally amazing accuracy whether I will like the film or not, purely by watching the promotional teasers / footage / clips / songs of the film on television. And when I saw the promos of Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna on television, I was absolutely certain that this is one movie I don’t’ want to watch.

Frankly, I haven’t been a fan of Karan Johar school of films. I have not liked any of his films. I did not like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai because I didn’t agree with the way the subject was handled. I liked music of the film very much though. I did not like Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham for the obvious reasons viz., too opulent, too garish, too self-absorbing, too weepy, too long and too much. I thought Kal Ho Naa Ho was strictly decent, thanks to an outstanding performance from Saif Ali Khan and a soulful and outstanding title track. I did not like Kaal.

This is starting to get more about yourself than films and bollywood. I had started to see your blog as a valuable fact source and down-to-earth, honest movie critic. But to do that, you at least have to watch the movie. I understand a blog does not bind you within any boundaries or protocol, but the least you owe yourself is to be an unbiased source and for that, watching the movie is essential. With the passion you have about bollywood, you owe yourself the intellectual honesty and to come across as unbiased. Otherwise you are in the same boat as Karan Johar who has given up the boundaries of a good film-maker to be a commercial hit.

Dear Anonymous,

First and foremost, I am extremely grateful to you for your honest feedback and appreciate your candour. Secondly, I'm probably guilty as charged. Thirdly, although I have written extensively written about Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, I have not commented on the movie as such. What I have written are my views based on the extraneous factors such as media interviews, television promos etc. However, you are right that keeping the mind my passion for the movie, I ought to have seen the movie before writing. And guess what, I just saw the movie last night and now officially have a take on the quality of the film. I will write my critique on the film in a day or two.

Lastly, I once again appreciate your frank feedback and would request you to keep coming back to my blog.
