First in the list of remakes is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas (2002) starring Shahrukh Khan (as Devdas), Madhuri Dixit (as Chandramukhi), Aishwarya Rai (as Paro) and Jackie Shroff (as Chunnilal). The music was by Ismail Darbar. Devdas is adapted from a novel of the same name by Saratchandra Chatterjee. It has been made twice before this version.
Devdas (1955) was directed by Bimal Roy had Dilip Kumar (as Devdas), Vyjyantimala (as Chandramukhi), Suchitra Sen (as Paro) and Motilal (as Chunnilal). Music was by Sachin Dev Burman.
Devdas (1936) was directed by P. C. Barua with K. L. Saigal (as Devdas), Rajkumari (as Chandramukhi) and Jamuna (as Paro).
All three versions were hits. Of course, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's was the biggest of them all because it was released the last. It was very garish, and opulent. Personally, I did not like the movie so much. But the re-make ensured lot of praise for Sanjay Leela Bhansali as a film maker and he definitely laughed his way to the bank.

Hey Girish,
Something tells me that you are not a big fan of Karan Johar or of his style of film-making. From the story that you've set out, I see that there's nothing new. I mean, everybody knows this part of the story. However, how does Boy 1 marry Girl 1 and Boy 2 marry Girl 2 is what the movie may be all about.
Having said that, personally, I dont think I would want to watch Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. However, it also cannot be denied that Karan Johar (like Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra) do have a knack of belting out hits after hits and knowing the pulse of the audience. Irrespective of how the movie may be, he's got a winner in terms of the casting (AB, SRK, junior AB, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherjee), music by Shankar Ehsan & Loy and lyrics by Javed AKhtar. And the movie is set in New York.
Let's wait and watch how the movie fares at the box office.
Are you planning to go "First Day First Show"?
You still have not answered my question, who do you think would have sent this email (oringinator, do remember that this movie has not yet released, so its someone from the industry).
If you can arrange for passes I would not mind watching it first day first show!! What say....
I need to catch MI3 and Fanna before KANK.
If it's somebody from the industry, my guess would be Ram Gopal Varma. However, I dont think it would be so difficult to guess this story of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. Any layman who regularly sees hindi films, would have guessed it.
